Comparing car insurance
How often should I compare rates?
At least once a year, ideally about 30 days before your policy renews, and any time you have a major life change such as moving, buying a car, getting married, adding a driver, or a change to your driving record.
Will comparing rates affect my credit?
Insurers that use credit information for rating typically perform a soft inquiry, which does not affect your credit score. Practices vary by insurer and state, so ask each insurer if you have concerns.
What does "apples-to-apples" mean?
It means comparing quotes with the same liability limits, deductibles, and optional coverages. Only then can you tell which offer is actually a better value.
Can I switch insurers in the middle of my policy?
Usually, yes. Most insurers let you cancel at any time and refund any unused premium, though some may charge a cancellation fee. Make sure your new policy starts before your old one ends to avoid a gap in coverage.
